Cecilia Hefton

Tamara

When Cecilia Hefton’s job was outsourced for the second time, she went against the advice some gave her about being too old to start college and a new career.  “A lot of people bet against me my first semester in college, but I’ve got their support now,” said Hefton, who at 40 entered ASUMH and earned both her A.A.S. in Criminal Justice and an Associate of Arts.

Following news of the closing of the factory where she worked for twelve years, Hefton attended a presentation on Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), a benefit for workers who lose their jobs or whose hours of work and wages are reduced as a result of increased imports. TAA includes a variety of benefits and reemployment services to help unemployed workers prepare for and obtain suitable employment. Workers may receive assistance in skill assessment, job search workshops, job development/referral and job placement. In addition, workers may be eligible for training, job search allowance, a relocation allowance, and other reemployment services.

Even though many of her own family members thought she should find another job instead of beginning college so late in life Hefton had a real interest in working with Juvenile Services and wanted to pursue a degree in either Criminal Justice or Sociology.  Hefton learned about ASUMH’s work study program and began working part-time in the Learning Center.  While on the job, Hefton met Libby Smith, who became both teacher and mentor for her.  “Libby was a non-traditional student herself, so she really knew what it would take for me to succeed!”

After finishing up her Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice, Smith encouraged Hefton to continue working toward her Associate of Arts.  Their relationship grew when Smith became Director of the Title III program at ASUMH and hired Hefton full-time as Title III Data Analyst.   “While working in the learning center, I realized how important encouragement to fellow students can help them reach their goals.  I know that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.”   While she loves working with Title III and students who come through the office daily, Hefton will begin work on her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology this summer.  “Who knows where the future will take me, but it’s wonderful to work with successful people like the ladies I work with at ASUMH.  When you work with people who radiate success, you’re only going to succeed yourself,” Hefton said.  “Someone said that I was meant to come to college, I just took the scenic route!  That’s the truth!”
