ABOUT THE DONOR
Terre Green Ware of Mountain Home
Terre Green Ware of Mountain Home, Arkansas, donated $10,000.00 in 2021 to Arkansas State University-Mountain Home (ASUMH) to endow a new Author Lecture Series. The gift allows different authors to visit ASUMH and present a lecture to the community. Authors of both fiction and non-fiction will be chosen by a small group of reviewers. The Performing Arts Council at ASUMH will assist in scheduling the events on the ASUMH campus.
Ware said her donation to ASUMH grew out of her own love for reading. She grew up a reader as part of a family dedicated to reading and passed that love to her own children, Pittman and Nicholas, she said. “Understanding the power of reading for knowledge, pleasure, and joy has always been a large part of my life. This gift has been on my heart for years,” said Ware. “The few times we have had authors speak to us at ASUMH, it has been extremely well received. My feeling was that we need more of that, therefore it was my desire and dream to make this happen for our college, as well as our community. I am humbled and honored to provide this. With the help of others, it can grow! I know my family is smiling down from heaven. After all, they are a part of this too!”

Anne Keene - Keene is the author of the best-selling wartime baseball classic, The Cloudbuster Nine: The Untold Story of Ted Williams and the Baseball Team That Helped Win WWII. The book, which interweaves personal history and national heritage, highlights a little-known Navy training program where her father served as batboy for a team of major league ballplayers—including Ted Williams—preparing to become fighter pilots in the Pacific.
Her work shines a light on one of America’s greatest eras of sacrifice and patriotism, and her storytelling has reached national audiences. Keene’s articles on wartime players such as Babe Ruth and Ted Williams have been featured in The New York Times, HISTORY, Navy Times, and leading sports magazines. She has also appeared on C-SPAN’s American History Channel and PBS’s Book Watch, and has presented at the National World War II Museum, the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and Major League Baseball events, including the Boston Red Sox 75th anniversary of WWII.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Journalism, Keene frequently speaks to university audiences and U.S. Naval Academy chapters about athletes from the Greatest Generation who served in World War II. She currently contributes to FOX Nation’s “Field of Valor” series, which highlights sports heroes and veterans such as New York Yankee Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio and LPGA co-founder and Marine veteran Patty Berg.
Rex Nelson - The first speaker in the new Terre Ware Author Lecture Series at Arkansas State University-Mountain Home (ASUMH) was Rex Nelson, author of Southern Fried: Going Whole Hog in a State of Wonder. The event took place at 6:00 p.m. on October 26, 2021. Rex Nelson is the senior editor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, where he writes three columns a week along with stories for the newspaper's Sunday Perspective section. Nelson, one of the state's most high-profile writers and speakers, has had a long career in journalism, government and public affairs.
Mara Leveritt - The second speaker in the Terre Ware Author Lecture Series was by Mara Leveritt, author of Devil’s Knot, All Quiet at Mena, and The Boys on the Tracks on March 7, 2023. Leveritt is an American investigative reporter best known for her examinations of official conduct regarding serious crimes in Arkansas. Though often categorized as a “true crime” writer, she says, “I’m more interested in what happens when officials mishandle criminal cases, a sub-genre I’ve dubbed ‘crime after crime’.”
Leveritt’s best known work is Devil’s Knot, about three Arkansas teenagers who were convicted virtually without evidence of having murdered three eight-year-old boys in a crime prosecutors said arose from the teens’ alleged interest in “the occult.” Library Journal called Devil’s Knot “an indictment of a culture and legal system that failed to protect children as defendants or victims.” The New York Times listed the book among 50 “classic” accounts of murder in the United States. A 2013 film based on it starred Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon.
Eli Cranor - Eli Cranor, nationally-bestselling author of Don’t Know Tough and Ozark Dogs, presented a lecture at Arkansas State University-Mountain Home (ASUMH) on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. The third speaker in the Terre Ware Author Lecture Series at ASUMH, Cranor lives and writes from the banks of Lake Dardanelle, a reservoir of the Arkansas River nestled in the heart of True Grit country.
He is an Edgar Award recipient and his debut novel, Don’t Know Tough, won the Peter Lovesey First Crime Novel Contest and was named one of the “Best Books of the Year” by USA Today and one of the “Best Crime Novels” of 2022 by the New York Times. Cranor also pens a weekly column, “Where I’m Writing From,” for the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, and his craft column, “Shop Talk,” appears monthly at CrimeReads. His newest novel, Ozark Dogs, is now available wherever books are sold.
