Legacy Gifts

GIFTS OF EQUITIES & SECURITIES

Capital gains tax on the increase in value of long-term appreciated
stock, bonds or mutual fund shares can be avoided when these
items are gifted to ASU System Foundation--ASUMH. You may also
receive a tax deduction for their full fair market value at the time
of your gift.

GIFTS OF DECREASED VALUE ASSETS
Gifts made to ASU System Foundation--ASUMH, qualify as charitable
contributions to an I. R. S. Section 501(c)(3) organization for
federal estate and gift tax purposes. All donations are tax deductible
to the fullest extent allowable by law.

CHARITABLE BEQUEST (WILLS AND TRUSTS)
A bequest is an act of giving personal property or financial assets
such as stocks, bonds, jewelry and cash to an individual or organization
through the provisions of a will or estate plan. With the help of
an advisor, bequests can be made to family, friends, Arkansas State
University, Mountain Home.

BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION
Just name ASUMH as a beneficiary to receive assets such as retirement
plans and life insurance policies after you’re gone. You simply
fill out a form that is entirely separate from your will—which makes
this approach an easy way to give.
Not only is it an easy way to give, but it’s also flexible—you aren’t
locked into the choices you make today. You can review and adjust
beneficiary designations anytime you want.

DONOR ADVISED FUND
You transfer cash or other assets to a tax-exempt sponsoring organization
such as a public foundation. You can then recommend—but
not direct—how much and how often money is granted to ASUMH
or other charities—sometimes as easily as using a Web portal. And
you avoid the cost and complexities of managing a private foundation.
You qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction at the
time you contribute to the account, and the power to make recommendations
on which charities to support whenever you want. You
centralize your giving and record-keeping in one location. And maybe
best of all, you can start a legacy of giving by letting your children
help decide which grants to recommend.

Gifts That Provide Income

GIFTS THAT PROVIDE INCOME
A legacy gift is a planned future donation to a charity, given
through a will or other form of designation. It is a decision that
each person makes in their own financial planning process,
taking into account their charitable wishes and values.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY
A charitable gift annuity involves a contract between a donor
and a charity, whereby the donor transfers cash or property to
the charity in exchange for a partial tax deduction and a lifetime
stream of annual income from the charity. When the donor dies,
the charity keeps the gift.
The amount of the income stream is determined by many factors
including the donor’s age and the policy of the charity. Most charities
in the United States use payout rates defined by the American
Council on Gift Annuities.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS
If you have built up a sizeable estate and are also looking for
ways to receive reliable payments, you may want to check out the
advantages of setting up a charitable remainder trust.
Benefits of a charitable remainder trust include:
• Potential for a partial charitable income tax deduction
• Potential for increased income
• Up-front capital gains tax avoidance

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTS
A charitable lead annuity trust pays a fixed amount each year to
ASUMH and is more attractive when interest rates are low.
A charitable lead unitrust pays a variable amount each year based
on the value of the assets in the trust. With a unitrust, if the trust’s
assets go up in value, for example, the payments to ASUMH go
up as well.
