Members of the Beta Iota Epsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa journeyed to the University of Arkansas March 6-7, 2020, for the Oklahoma/Arkansas Regional Convention. Those attending were Lauren Malte, chapter president, Riya Patel, vice president of service, Nancy Stang, vice president of communications, Alexis Yearwood, vice president of fellowship, and Cooper Gregory, candidate for Eastern Region President. The advisors accompanying them were Dr. Cyndi Crisel and Dr. Rebecca Baird.
While at the convention, the members heard from speakers Dr. Bob Cochran, Professor of English and author of Singing in Zion, Vance Randolph: An Ozark Life, and Lights!Camera!Arkansas!: From Broncho Billy to Billy Bob Thorton, on “I Sacked that City.” Dr. Chaim Goodman-Strauss, Professor of Mathematics and co-author of The Symmetries of Things, delivered the keynote address on day two on “Little Things that Changed the World."
At the awards banquet that closed the event, the chapter came away with the REACH Award for increased membership, 2nd place in Honors in Action Theme 3, 2nd place in Chapter Project posters, 2nd place in Prepared Speeches (Lauren Malte), Top Five Overall Honors in Action projects, Five Star Chapter recognition, and Host Chapter recognition. Cooper Gregory was elected to the role of Eastern Region President.
Phi Theta Kappa, the largest honor society in American higher education, provides opportunities for student leadership growth and development by engaging students in a wide variety of activities and projects that benefit our world, country, state, community, and campus.
