Arkansas State University–Mountain Home (ASUMH) has been officially recognized as a Purple Star Campus, a designation awarded to institutions that demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families.
The Purple Star designation highlights campuses that go above and beyond to ease the transition for students from military families, who often face frequent relocations, by offering dedicated resources and support systems. These include designated staff points of contact, accessible information through dedicated websites, and transition programs designed to help students stay on track both academically and socially.
While the Purple Star distinction is awarded across K-12 and higher education institutions, Arkansas law requires that all public schools with at least 20 military-connected students earn the designation. The initiative was created in response to the unique challenges faced by military families, particularly the frequent moves that can disrupt a student’s educational continuity.
Though the college has made meaningful progress, ASU-Mountain Home leadership emphasized that this recognition is just one step in an ongoing effort to enhance support systems for veterans and their families.
Dr. Shurley played a key role in guiding ASU-Mountain Home through the Purple Star designation process, helping lead the institution’s efforts to formalize and strengthen its support for military-affiliated students.
ASU-Mountain Home remains committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where all students, including those connected to military service, can succeed.
