Fall Season Wrap-up for ASUMH TrailBlazer Athletics

OCTOBER 25, 2023

Arkansas State University-Mountain Home has wrapped up its fall athletic season with success and an eye toward spring play!

In its second season, the TrailBlazer baseball team, with a roster of more than 50 players from four states, played scrimmages on their home field at Cooper Park and traveled to Arkansas Tech, UA-Little Rock, and Crowder College, a perennial top-10 program.

According to head baseball coach and athletic director Spencer Adcock, “The TrailBlazers have turned heads everywhere they have played this fall, showing they can compete.  We played all of our ASU System schools, as many are starting their first year in athletics. It’s been a productive fall for the TrailBlazer baseball team.”  Adcock added “The TrailBlazers have a stable full of good arms and a very impressive offense that should be fun to watch this spring.”

About the players, Adcock says, “Many of our sophomores are getting interest from four-year schools. A few commitments have already been announced including Lakin Woods, Henderson State University; Alex Harrell, Georgia Gwinnett College; and Josh Nicholson, Ecclesia College.”

JoAnn Baeten, head softball coach at ASUMH, said the fall season for the TrailBlazer softball players saw many firsts.  The team had twelve freshmen playing their first-ever college softball game.  Tinley Williams, Bre Johnson and Ashley Earley had their first college home runs!

The team returned just one player from the inaugural exhibition season that was cut short last spring due to injuries.  Sophomore first baseman Keilee Robberson began her second season at ASUMH and Baeten called out her “leadership and steady bat and play” as a highlight of the growth of the program as the team moves into winter workouts.  The spring season that begins in February is looking to be exciting as the team looks for their first official college win in NJCAA Region 2 softball.

The ASUMH Bass Fishing team, led by coach Matt Klinger, says the team did very well competing in their first tournament of the year at the AFTO Collegiate Bass Open on Lake Dardanelle.  “The tournament consisted of over 240 college teams from all over the nation.  ASUMH entered two boats and proved they have what it takes to compete with some of the best teams in the country,” said Klinger.

The ASUMH Bass Fishing team consists of Jace McMasters, Landon Gibson, and Hunter Jones.  The next tournament the team plans to compete in is the Missouri State Collegiate Bass Open on Table Rock Lake on November 12.  In the spring, the team has their sights on entering more Collegiate Bass Fishing tournaments, in addition to Major League Fishing and BassMaster College Series events.

Rounding out the athletic program at ASUMH is Esports.  ASUMH has joined the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) which allows players to compete with colleges around the nation. Sara Anderson, sponsor of the Esports team at ASUMH, said, “Our first season out, our Rocket League team is tied for first place, undefeated thus far in their division, and our Overwatch team is in third place.  We have 15 players and are recruiting for more as we want to launch more games in the future.”

ASUMH looks to add three more Esports teams this spring which will include competitors in Super Smash Bros, Valorant, and Rainbow 6.  “Our competitors are excited for what’s to come in the future of gaming,” said Anderson.

As athletic director, Adcock thinks back over his first two years with ASUMH, and notes that ASUMH is a place for motivated individuals to excel.  “The college leadership and community have created an environment that allows these student athletes to thrive in their sport as well as the classroom.  I could not be prouder of our coaches and athletes as they continue to create the standard of success at ASUMH.”
