Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Brings Home Multiple Awards at Regional Convention
At a recent convention of the Oklahoma/Arkansas Region of Phi Theta Kappa, the Arkansas State University-Mountain Home chapter brought home numerous awards honoring their achievement. Held at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith campus, the convention took place March 1-2. Receiving awards on behalf of the ASUMH chapter were sponsors Dr. Cynthia Crisel and Dr. Rebecca Baird; and ASUMH students Cole Taylor, Kelly Baker, and Jude Dillon.
The ASUMH PTK Chapter brought home the following honors:
Top Five Distinguished Chapter: Certificate of Distinction
Top Five College Project: Certificate of Merit
Honors in Action Theme 2: Certificate of Merit, second place
Distinguished Chapter Member: Mark Newsom, second place
Distinguished Chapter Advisor Team: Certificate of Merit for Baird and Crisel, second place
Five-Star Chapter Level
Most Distinguished Chapter Officer Team, first place
Most Distinguished Advisor: Dr. Rebecca Baird, first place
The attending members also competed in the PTK Quiz Bowl and won every round they were in, going down in the final round, losing to the advisor challenge team by one question.
About the recognition, Dr. Baird said, “Our marvelous students brought home several awards that demonstrate their commitment to scholarship, leadership, fellowship and service. We were so happy to have them recognized for their Honors in Action project. The project focused on 'play' and integrated our new baseball team’s information into that project. Without play, you can’t study. Playing to learn is a huge field in education – you enjoy learning when you play to learn. These students work together and are passionate about what they embrace. They choose their topics and choose what they want to work on. When they do that, they bring their whole game.” Crisel added, “These are just exceptional students. Half of the excitement is knowing how hard they worked this year.”
ASUMH Chancellor Dr. Bentley Wallace congratulated the students and sponsors by adding, “The results from the regional Phi Theta Kappa conference highlight, once again, the amazing scholarly work being done by students at ASUMH.”
