Academic Expectations

Course Syllabus

A course syllabus is how your instructor for each course will communicate how that course will run, the rules you are expected you to follow, book information, and any additional information that you should know pertaining to the course. The syllabus will be posted in your Blackboard shell and it is critical that you read the syllabus for each and every course that you are enrolled in at the beginning of the semester.

Class Attendance

Regular attendance is essential in a college-level course. Students should miss no more than three hours of classroom instruction per semester. Instructors monitor attendance in online classes based on participation in the class as evidenced by students turning in assignments, participating in discussion boards, or corresponding via e-mail. Excessive absences may be penalized, including failure of the course, at the discretion of the instructor. Make up work is at the discretion of the instructor. Failure to attend class does not constitute withdrawal, and the appropriate withdrawal process must be followed. See the ASUMH Catalog and Student Handbook for withdrawal procedure.

Office Hours

Each of your instructors at ASUMH will have specific times that are reserved for meeting with students. These are called office hours. The days and times that your professor is available are outlined in the course syllabus.

This time is specifically for you to meet with your instructor on an individual level. Whether you need additional help with class content, or there is something going on in your life that requires special attention, your instructors want to meet with you! Office hours are an important time for professors to get to know students on an individual, personal level. Feel free to stop by just to say hi and introduce yourself!

How much time should I plan for homework and studying?

Study time is as important as class time! This is when you prepare for what will be discussed in class.

A general rule-of-thumb is that you should study 2 hours outside of class for every hour you spend in class. Don’t overlook how important this time is! Your success in any given class can largely be determined by how much time you spend outside of class. If you fall behind in studying outside of class, it is very difficult to make up this time.

One excellent strategy for staying on top of that time is to form a study group. Students who study together typically stay engaged better and for longer. Combine forces for studying success!

Academic Integrity/Plagarism

We want to know that you understand the material being covered in class and can produce work that is your own. Dishonesty in any form, including but not limited to plagiarism, submitting assignments prepared by others, unauthorized possession of exams, or using unauthorized materials during exams, may result in the student being withdrawn from the class with a failing grade or being suspended from the university. For further information, refer to the ASUMH Catalog and Student Handbook.
