To support local restaurants and people with a sincere need for food in our area, a new project, MountainHome Cares, has been developed by local volunteers and will begin this Friday, April 3 on the campus of Arkansas State University-Mountain Home (ASUMH).
For those who have a self-identified need, 400 meals will be distributed by Holy Smokes Barbeque at 4:00 on the ASU-MountainHome campus in the Roller Hall portico.
Cars will drive through and Holy Smokes will hand the meals through the car window. There will be a limit of four meals per car on a first-come, first-served basis. The distribution will last until the supply is exhausted or 7:00 p.m. when any remaining meals will be donated to local non-profit organizations in need.
The project, which began as the idea of Geoff Smith and Kirk Brown, will raise money to buy meals from local restaurants to be given to those in need. This support will help our local restaurants during this difficult time when their dining rooms are closed while also supporting those with food insecurity in the Twin Lakes Area.
The Salvation Army will serve as the conduit for donations that can be made to them in care of Mountain Home Cares. The Salvation Army will pay the restaurants.
This Friday is a test run to see how this works, if there is a need, and if there is financial support for the project. Volunteers will work to raise awareness and funds for seven future events if all goes well Friday.
Donations may be made to the Salvation Army (c/o MH Cares) by mail at Post Office Box 650, Mountain Home, AR 72654, or in person at the Salvation Army church located at 121 Highway 201 North. Questions may be directed to Odessa at the Salvation Army office by calling 870-424-5708.
